About the Author

Ranjit Rae is a former Indian ambassador to Nepal. He also headed the Northern Division in the Ministry of External Affairs, dealing with India's Himalayan neighbours, Nepal and Bhutan, from 2002 to 2006. Since retirement, Rae has been involved in travelling, trekking and trying to make sense of the developments in Nepal. This is his first book.

An important book by Ranjit Rae, the former Ambassador to Nepal. This book is based on deep knowledge of and affection for Nepal and it’s people. Nepal has been undergoing huge social and political transformations during the last twenty years, and so has India. These changes have impacted the already complex relationship between the two close neighbours. Regional changes, such as the rise of China, are also having a huge impact on this historically close relationship. This book provides a really valuable understanding of the cultural and political ties that bind the two countries and how these are changing and evolving. Importantly, it also looks ahead and provides guidance on how to navigate the way forward in an uncertain world. The book fills a vacuum since surprisingly there is not much contemporary literature available on this important relationship.

I enjoyed reading the extremely well-written book 'Kathmandu Dilemma - Resetting India-Nepal Ties' by Ranjit Rae. His book portrays his deep knowledge of the country, its people and, as he puts it, ‘everything that binds us – religion, culture, traditions, language, ties of kinship…the great aesthetic traditions…’. Whilst Ranjit Rae mentions that ‘I have never kept a diary', his lucid recollection of personalities, events and even dates is astounding. His account of his visit to Pashupatinath temple on Mahashivratri and India’s ‘roti, beti ka rishta’ with Nepal made an interesting reading. Extremely gripping till the end. A must read – highly recommended.

Reading this book was a colossal waste of time. Ranjit was in general undeclared persona non-grata in Nepal due to his condescending attitude, undiplomatic oratory skills, and a colonial-esque attitude towards Nepal. In his book he had made a genuine attempt to promote a bad reputation of Hindustan in Nepal.
