Abstract: This project is aimed to lower the concentration of sour gas, ammonia and phenols from coal gasification wastewater stream by treating it with a strenuous process. Here, we have used the Lurgi coal gasification process. The wastewater from this process contains ammonia, phenols, hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide etc. With the help of Aspen Plus Simulation, using proper temperature, pressure and solvent, we were able to totally remove the sour gas from the wastewater before sending it for bio treatment plant. We were able to remove almost 2/3rd of the original concentration of ammonia by using numerous flash columns with pressure and temperature. By using MIBK as solvent, there was noticeable change in concentration of phenol, which was removed at the end with help of extractor and distillation column. Overall, the process was a major success in treating coal gasification wastewater and sure there is further scope for this process to advance in future.
